The scouring process of textiles is a process of removing impurities, dirt, residual sizes from natural fibers (cotton, wool, hemp, silk) or non-fibre substances such as oil and sizes from synthetic fibers.
The scouring of cotton and hemp textiles is also called scouring because of the early cooking pot.
The refinement of silk fabrics is mainly to remove sericin, so it is also called degumming.

The function of scouring agent:
1. Help alkali (or other refined liquor) penetrate into the fibers;
2. Promote the emulsification and dispersion of waxes and oils.
3. To further emulsify and disperse the impurities separated from the fibers in the scouring bath to prevent re-attachment to the fibers.
Therefore, the scouring agent needs not only better cleaning effect, but also better penetration, emulsification, dispersion, solubilization and other effects.
The following requirements are required for scouring agents in the scouring process:
1. It has good compatibility with related chemicals (such as sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide, insurance powder, etc.).
2. Good resistance to hard water and adaptability to water quality.
3. It has good permeability, emulsification and dispersibility.
4. Easily soluble in water, preferably in cold water.
5. It has foamability that meets the requirements of equipment.
6. Low affinity to fibers, easy to wash and fast to clean.
7. Preventing re-staining is good and can improve the whiteness of the fabric.
